  • Further details to be announced in the next few weeks

What We Know So Far

Currently, under the ARRS Scheme, Primary Care Networks (PCNs) can claim reimbursement for the salaries (and some on costs) of 17 new roles within the multidisciplinary team. The government has announced changes to the scheme, allowing Newly Qualified GPs to be recruited into the NHS through this program in 2024-2025.

This is an emergency measure for 2024-2025 to ensure patients have access to GPs and that GPs can secure roles.

Dr Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services, said:

“Adding General Practitioners to the scheme is something that the profession has been calling for in recent months to make it easier for practices to hire more staff – so I welcome this measure which is an important first step to increasing GP employment in the long-term.

What is the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS)?

The Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) is a program aimed at expanding the primary care workforce by funding the recruitment of additional roles within Primary Care Networks. These roles are designed to support GPs and enhance patient care. The scheme covers a wide range of healthcare professionals, including:

  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Clinical Pharmacists
  • Pharmacy Technicians
  • Paramedics
  • Mental Health Practitioners
  • Physician Associates
  • First Contact Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists

The ARRS aims to alleviate pressure on GPs by diversifying the primary care team and improving patient access to a broader range of services within the community.
